The Foundation Helga Heidrich is a non-profit organization that saves animals in need. It provides veterinary care and a new home for injured, abandoned and abused animals in Morocco. The first sanctuary for stray and working animals was built in 1995. They also maintain Morocco’s first and only shelter for Berber Monkeys and parrots.

I spent from mid-September to mid-October 2016 in Morocco. Shadowing the founder, Helga Heidrich, was a hugely eye-opening experience. Protecting animals within a culture that holds very little regard for them is difficult. There are a small handful of organizations across the country – some by expats, some by locals, some by Moroccan diaspora – that are working hard to end cruelty to animals and barbaric practices like shooting street dogs. Just prior to Cop22, there were mass shootings of dogs to clean up the streets for all the foreigners that were to descend on Marrakesh and marvel at the “clean” and “green” city. Please support foundations like FHH. Your money is going to a good place.

The fondation Helga Heidrich tries to protect animals as well as people of the deadly rabies virus.
